The UK Is Open to Kenyan Professionals — But You Need a Sponsor

The UK Skilled Worker Visa is the main route for Kenyan professionals to work in the United Kingdom. It is a solid pathway — but unlike some other countries, it requires a job offer from a UK employer before you can apply.

Here is everything you need to know.

The Core Requirement: A Licensed Sponsor

To apply, you must have a job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid Sponsor Licence. Not every UK employer has one — but the list is large and growing, particularly in healthcare, engineering, IT, and education.

Your employer will issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — a reference number that forms the backbone of your visa application.

Do You Qualify?

You need to meet all of the following:

  • A job offer from a licensed UK sponsor
  • The job must be on the eligible occupations list (most skilled roles qualify)
  • Minimum salary of £38,700 per year (as of 2024 — this threshold increased significantly; check current requirements as they are reviewed periodically)
  • English language proficiency at the required level
  • Enough savings to support yourself on arrival (at least £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days, unless your employer certifies maintenance)
  • Some roles — particularly in healthcare and education — have different salary thresholds based on NHS or national pay scales.

    The Points-Based System

The UK uses a points-based system. You need 70 points:

    RequirementPoints
    Job offer from approved sponsor20
Job at required skill level (RQF Level 3+)20
    English language at required level10
    Salary meets threshold20

    Documents Required

  • Valid Kenyan passport
  • Certificate of Sponsorship reference number from your employer
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IELTS, a degree taught in English, or other accepted evidence)
  • Bank statements (£1,270 held for 28 consecutive days — unless your employer certifies maintenance)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test results from an approved clinic in Kenya — this is mandatory for Kenyan applicants and is often overlooked. Approved TB testing clinics are located in Nairobi. Allow 3–5 business days for results.
  • Criminal record certificate from Kenya
  • Processing Times

  • Standard processing: up to 8 weeks
  • Priority processing: 5 business days (additional fee of approximately £500)
  • Super priority: next working day (additional fee of approximately £800)
  • If you have a start date to meet, priority processing is worth considering.

Can My Family Come With Me?

Yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply as dependants. They can work and study in the UK — your partner has full work rights with no restrictions.

    The Path to Permanent Residency

After 5 years on a Skilled Worker Visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — the UK's permanent residency. After a further 12 months with ILR, you can apply for British citizenship.

This is a well-trodden pathway. Many Kenyan professionals who came to the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa are now permanent residents or citizens.

    Common Reasons for Refusal

  • Salary below the required threshold
  • Sponsor licence issues (the employer's licence has lapsed or been revoked)
  • TB test not completed or results not submitted
  • Insufficient financial evidence
  • English language requirement not met
  • Incomplete application
  • Finding a UK Employer Who Will Sponsor You

This is the hardest part for most applicants — not the visa itself, but finding a job offer in the first place. The UK government publishes a register of licensed sponsors, which you can search by sector and location. Healthcare (NHS), IT, engineering, and education are the sectors with the most active sponsors.

We can advise on job search strategy and help you verify whether a potential employer holds a valid sponsor licence before you invest time in an application.
