What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's online system for managing applications for permanent residency under three federal programs:

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
Once you create an Express Entry profile, you are assigned a CRS score. Points are awarded for:

How Draws Work
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts regular draws from the Express Entry pool, inviting the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residency. These are called Invitations to Apply (ITAs).
CRS cut-off scores have ranged from around 470–550 in recent draws, though this varies. Category-based draws — targeting specific occupations like healthcare, STEM, and trades — sometimes have lower cut-offs.
How to Improve Your CRS Score
This is where preparation makes a real difference:
Language scores — Your IELTS General Training or CELPIP score has a major impact on your CRS. The difference between IELTS 7.0 and 8.0 in each band can be worth 30–50 CRS points. If you are close to a higher band, it is worth retaking the test.
Canadian job offer — A valid job offer from a Canadian employer adds 50–200 points depending on the role. This is significant but not always easy to obtain from Kenya.
Provincial nomination — A nomination from a Canadian province adds 600 points, which virtually guarantees an ITA. Each province has its own streams targeting specific occupations. This is often the most reliable route for candidates with lower CRS scores.
Education — Get your foreign credentials assessed by a designated organisation (WES is the most commonly used). A Canadian equivalent assessment can improve your education points.
French language skills — Bilingual candidates receive significant bonus points. If you have any French ability, it is worth developing.
Processing Times
Once you receive an ITA and submit a complete application, Canadian permanent residency is typically processed within 6 months. This is genuinely fast compared to most immigration pathways.
